Why Lithium-Ion Batteries Have Become the “Leading Technology” in Energy Storage
Imagine your smartphone battery as a sponge that can repeatedly absorb and release energy. During charging, it “absorbs” electricity and stores it as chemical energy; during use, it “squeezes” out that energy to power your devices. This simple process represents the core principle of energy storage batteries.
Among today’s new energy storage technologies, lithium-ion battery storage has become the dominant solution, accounting for more than 95% of China’s new energy storage market. From consumer electronics and electric vehicles to large-scale energy storage systems, lithium-ion batteries have become the preferred technology for a wide range of applications.
In 2024, global lithium-ion battery shipments exceeded 1.3 TWh. China’s lithium-ion battery production reached 1,170 GWh, representing a year-on-year increase of 24%, while the industry’s total output value surpassed RMB 1.2 trillion. The installed capacity of lithium-ion batteries, including applications in electric vehicles and energy storage systems, exceeded 645 GWh, growing by 48% year-on-year. Together with photovoltaic products and electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries have become one of China’s most recognized “New Three” export industries.
The energy storage capability of a battery depends largely on how much electrical charge can be stored within a given mass. The higher the charge-to-mass ratio of an element, the more energy it can store within a limited space. Among safe, environmentally friendly, and electrochemically active elements, lithium has the highest charge-to-mass ratio among solid elements, making it an ideal foundation for high-energy-density batteries.
In lithium-ion batteries, lithium exists in compound form within the layered structures of the cathode and anode. During operation, lithium ions move between the two electrodes through a process called intercalation and deintercalation.
This process can be compared to a library borrowing system. During charging, lithium ions move from the cathode “shelf” to the anode “storage cabinet”; during discharging, they return to the cathode to release energy. The electrolyte acts like a librarian, guiding the movement of lithium ions safely and efficiently. Meanwhile, the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film) works like a protective security gate, helping maintain battery stability and extending service life.
This ability to deliver high energy density, long cycle life, and stable performance is the fundamental reason why lithium-ion batteries have become the leading choice for modern energy storage.
Another major advantage of lithium-ion batteries is their cost competitiveness. Their cathodes are mainly made from transition metal oxides with abundant resources, while their anodes typically use graphite, a widely available and economical material. With continuous technological improvements and large-scale production, lithium-ion batteries have achieved significant cost reductions.
For example, assuming an electric vehicle consumes 20 kWh per 100 kilometers, the electricity cost is approximately RMB 20, while the fuel cost for a comparable gasoline vehicle can exceed RMB 50 per 100 kilometers. This cost advantage has accelerated the global transition toward clean energy and marked an important milestone in the transformation of the energy industry.
